Figuring Out What You're Good At

Figuring out what you're good at is the first step towards following your dreams.

Unless you are the type of person who was born knowing exactly who and what you are supposed to be in life, you've probably spent more time than you'd care to admit wondering what it is that you're supposed to be "bringing to the table" during your time on Earth.

I often talk about following the dreams that God has placed on your heart. That's what Taking Back YOU is all about. I want mamas to feel free to do the things they want to do, without worry for what people will think, or what they will say.

It's important that you, as a mother, follow your dreams, because you are the role model for your children. Your children are looking up to you. They are following your lead. And if you don't show them the way, who will?

But what if you don't KNOW what you're supposed to be doing? What if you don't know what you're good at?

That's entirely feasible, especially because women are taught to downplay our positive attributes in an effort to keep us from appearing to be self-centered or superficial.

What ends up happening is that we become lost. Do you know what I mean? You were told not to accentuate your positives, and because of this, you may have forgotten what they are.

So let's fix that. Here's what you do:

Figure Out What Makes You Feel Strong

There's honestly nothing better than when you are in your groove. When what you're doing is perfect for you. When you're in your element.

So what activities do you feel excited about? What's your go to thing to do when you feel like you're out of control?

What Compliments Do You Tend To Ignore?

How many times have you been told something positive about yourself, only to downplay what was said? Do you have a hard time hearing good things about yourself? Why do you think that is?

I'll bet you feel that way because you've been told to be humble and to not be a show-off.

But realize this. When people take the time to tell you something they like about you, you should believe them and take what they have to say to heart.

Usually God puts these people in your path on purpose. They are supposed to give you clues about the reason that God put you on this planet--the work you are to do while you are here.

So listen to what they have to say.

Think About What Comes Naturally To You

If you're being honest with yourself, and whether you want admit it or not, there is something that you are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G at. You just are. No brag, just facts.

What is that skill or attribute?

Me? I'm a great speaker and writer. I basically came out of the womb dancing and singing. And I'm funny as all get out.

I have always been good at those things. And that's not to say that I didn't need some refinement and technical training (hello, years of dance training, college, and grad school), but even without that training, I have a knack. It's okay. I can admit it.

So what about you? I know you have something, even if you don't want to admit it. But listen... go ahead and admit it.

And even if it's not your passion, the things you are good at might lead you to your passion. Or confirm it. Either way.

Take A Personality Assessment

I know what you're thinking...and I used to be the same way. I thought those tests were a bunch of bull, and I didn't want to take any of them.

Until I did. And the test I took was spot on.

Now some of the tests I've taken have been a bit shoddy, I'm not gonna lie... but a couple of them have been perfect for helping me figure myself out.

My favorite is the DISC Assessment, by Tony Robbins. It told me all about myself, and how I'm likely to handle specific situations. That may sound a bit harsh, but it's good to know how you'll act when dealing with conflict within your given passion.

Look For Clues Everywhere

Keep your eyes and ears open, because the things that you are good at usually knock you in the head several times before you realize them. You'll cross paths long before you actually realize it.

You know how we humans are...a bit hard-headed, but we get there in the end.

Good luck with finding you,

P.S. If you know a mama who would benefit from receiving my weekly email filled with mama motivation, education and empowerment every Monday (Friday Favorite's included) share this link with them!
